Breakfast- Fresh Pastries
Lunch- Sandwich
Dinner- Pizza
Today Erin and I changed apartments. We stayed in the same building but moved upstairs. The apartment was a little bit of a down grade from what we had already which we were disappointed about. Our new kitchen is much less nice. This is disappointing because I enjoy cooking. The kitchen does have a lot of utensils which is a very nice feature. Anything we need to prepare food is available to us. This was also the same in our old apartment.
To make up for having to move my landlord brought me breakfast. His name is Mataeo and he is extremely nice. We couldn’t stay mad at him for moving us into a less nice place. Breakfast was amazing! He walked down the street to a fresh bakery and brought me pastries. Three of them were stuffed croissants. There was one with marmalade in it. It was delicious. The marmalade was very liquid in consistency and each croissant was very rich. I enjoyed them very much.
Erin and I also have been doing a lot of exploring with authentic Italian restaurants. We cant read the menu very well but it definitely is an adventure to see what we get! After foods class we stumbled upon a beautiful café close to our apartment. The drinks that were being prepared were not only delicious but also pieces of art. Two girls at a table were drinking a coffee like desert that was topped with nuts and whipped cream. They appeared to initially have a thick consistency but as they mixed the different layers of the concoction together it seemed to melt. They went from eating it with a spoon to drinking it. Also coffee drinks were prepared with steamed milk on the top with swirls of chocolate accent in them that were prepared in pattern form. It was really beautiful!
Erin and I ate lunch at this café. It was busy so we unfortunately did not sit down but as we waited for our food we got to take it all in. We each got a sandwich. Erin got a sandwich that looked like white bread with the crust cut off with shrimp, carrots and mayonnaise in it, kinda in a finger sandwich style. I tried a bite. It was very light. I got a sandwich that was much heavier in flavor. The bread had zucchini pieces baked into it. Inside was bruschetta and several kinds of cheeses. They toasted it for me. It took a while for them to toast it. I bring this up because we have realized drastically the slow pace that everyone seems to take here. Nothing is rushed and no one ever seems to be in a hurry. I enjoy it. Erin got ancy while we waited for the sandwich to slowly get toasted.
In photo class I got a drink from the vending machine. I didn’t know what it was but decided to try it. It was in a soda can but had a strange paper lid over the soda tab. The can was black and the drink tasted a little bit like moxie. It really wasn’t very good at all. I threw it away. I also tried Fresca that was pomegranate flavor. This was good!
After photo class we did a lot of walking around. We found a public swimming pool outside the city. Nate had found it earlier in the day. It was extremely muggy out so we were dying to go for a swim but it was already 7pm when we arrived, which was too late. We plan to go back at a later date.
On our walk back from the pool we stopped at a small fruit stand. Erin bought some fresh strawberries. The strawberries were extremely ripe and delicious. We ate an entire box immediately! They melted in our mouths as we ate them. They must be in season at this time. After we ate our strawberries we stopped at the Pan which is a local grocery store and stocked up on some food. We have noticed that the majority of the food hear is carbs. There is a large amount of pasta and breads. We picked up a large bottle of olive oil, a fresh loaf of bread, some wine, gnocchi, sausage with mustard baked in it, swiss cheese, and fresh mozzarella as well as several other things. Fresh mozzarella is cheap here and very good! We cut it up with tomatoes and snack on it in our apartment.
For dinner we stopped on our way to our apartment. I got a pizza that seemed to have everything you could ever put on a pizza on it. They cut a large piece of flat pizzas that look like our party pizzas in the U.S. and put it in a brick oven to warm it up. They weigh the pizza by the kg to determine the price of it. It is not sold by the slice but by weight which is very interesting to me. Erin got a calzone sort of thing that was stuffed with ham and cheese. The outside was bread with spinach baked into it. It was yummy but full of bread.
After dinner we put our groceries away and ran out because there was a fashion show in the main city! It was awesome. There was a ton of designers! The show was on the stairs of one of the old ruins with a runway that went off from that. We had a blast there.
After the fashion show we went out for drinks. We went to a college bar and got to do a lot of social drinking. The drinks that were prepared were similar to those of the United States. Nothing was really tried out of the ordinary. Gina and I asked for something unique to Verona to try. The bar tender made a drink in the colors of the Italian flag. It was really neat! The colors were all separated and he garnished the drink with limes. He did a lot of mixing to prepare the drink. He poured a red mixture from a small pitcher. She was told to mix up the drink to drink it. She thought that it was delicious! I had a mojito that I was told were the best in the world. The mint and lime was crushed right in front of me and then sugar and salt was added. Alcohol was put in and then my drink was garnished with a stock of fresh mint. After getting my drink Gina and I walked around and socialized. I met a really interesting guy named Andrea who is from Verona but working in Australia. Because of this he spoke excellent English! There is no better place to socialize then at these café’s! It’s great to meet locals also and get involved more in their culture.
